005 - deformities

Mon Apr 7, 2008, 6:09 PM
what would you do if you had the knowledge that your child would be deformed?

would you choose to keep the baby and devote yourself to helping it (supposing its condition wouldn't kill it)? or would you 'get rid of it' by abortion, adoption, or some other means?

if you chose to get rid of it, is it if you don't have the funds or time to devote to a handicapped/malformed baby, or because you couldn't bear to have a "freak" as your child?

i'm curious on the matter.

If I were trying to have a child, and I knew that that child would have a deformity, I think I would keep it. If I didn't have the money to support his or her needs, I would try my hardest to acquire it or if necessary, I would adopt the child out to someone more qualified to take better care of it. If, as you said, the deformity was not life threatening, I don't see why the child should be destroyed.
I guess it also depends on what you mean by deformity - something like an extra finger, or something more severe, or any kind of deformity? I guess....as long as the deformity did not affect the child in a way that would inhibit it from living, or in a way that could cause serious and/or life threatening health issues, I would see no problem with keeping it and raising it like any other child.

I would keep the child if I had the means of caring for the child, like if it needed treatments or special medical devices to live. If it was functional and could survive without that extra care then I would definitely take care of him/her and love it like any other child I would have. I think it would be so terrible to give the child up because you wouldn't want a 'freak' as a child, I mean if you think that then maybe it would be better for the child to be cared by someone else who would give him/her the love and opportunities the child deserves.

On a side note, have you seen the baby with two faces born in India and they are praising the child as a reincarnation of the godess Durga? Kick ass.

it all depends which kind of malformaty (sp?) we're talking about. since I'm pretty sure I'm never going to give birth, I can only assume how I would think if if I for example, had a girlfriend who gave birth.
the way I am thinking might be considered cruel, or cold, but I don't want to bring a child to this world who will experience more misery than a normal human being. it's a very hard matter to me, if I ever become a parent I want my child to be care-free and happy. it leans against getting rid of it, and I would do the same thing if I knew my child were going to be depressed, and that's one of the reasons why I don't want to give birth; I'm pretty sure my condition is hereditary.

if the handicap is physical however, I would keep the child, and I would devote myself to help him or her.
